7 reasons in favour of Marseilles
- Marseilles, because a part of Europe’s future will be played out in the Mediterranean and because Marseilles acts as one of the principal bridges for a future Mediterranean Union.
- Marseilles, because its diversity, its geographical position and the wealth of its international activities and co-operations make it a key strategic player in Euro-Mediterranean policy, a mirror and a model of what is at stake.
- Marseilles, because it is a metropolis in difficulty that is fighting back, investing in the knowledge economy and in creativity in order to develop, and which has committed itself to significant redevelopment projects with the aim of becoming a major centre of international exchange.
- Marseilles, because the power of its history, the importance of its geographical sites and the energy of its representatives afford it a potential attractiveness that demands to be highlighted.
- Marseilles, because it is a generous, welcoming city that has always sought cultural understanding and exchange and which is exploring different paths to surmount the countless barriers to harmonisation encountered by great cities undergoing development.
- Marseilles, because it is pursuing a great cultural ambition:
- A European and Mediterranean cultural ambition as demonstrated by the size, number and diversity of the events, partnerships and international projects that the city has put in place over recent years;
- A cultural ambition to rebuild the city and its surroundings, as shown by massive urban renewal and artistic projects, by the quality of the marriage between high and popular culture, by the exemplary efforts being made in favour of cultural democracy, by the rooting of creativity in neighbourhood life, and by the drive for research and innovation, as much in the arts as in relationships with the public, the city and society.
- Marseilles, because its efforts deserve to be more widely acknowledged and because the prospect of becoming European Capital of Culture would stimulate:
- the completion of the great cultural plans already scheduled for 2013;
- the federation of leading figures and forces around more collective projects whose impact and influence must be enhanced;
- the creation of new and sustainable Euro-Mediterranean artistic activities to take forward the recommendations of the 1995 Barcelona Agreements.
