On the eve of the first world war there were some 90 factories producing 180,000 tonnes a year. Then after the war, its existence was threatened by the arrival of washing machines and washing powders. Today, only a half-dozen soap factories remain in Marseilles and Salon de Provence. Go visit

Week-end watercolour painting
